These drawings are about the hours leading to the death of Jesus through somber and dark passages from Matthew, Luke, and Mark accompanied by artwork per passage. The Tenebrae, Latin for "darkness" or "shadow", is a religious service held during the three days leading up to Easter. This is a time of reflection of some of the stages beginning at the last supper, with the betrayal of one of the Apostles, and ending with the death and burial of Jesus. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” - John 15:13 ESV
The Shadow of Betrayal
20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. 21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”
-Mathew 26: 20-25 ESV
The Shadow of the Agony of Spirit
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
-Mathew 26: 39 ESV
The Shadow of the Agony of Spirit - 2022
39 He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 When he reached the place, he told them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.” 41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44 Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.[a] 45 When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation.”
